If you’re reading this blog, then you already benefit from photonics on a daily basis.
What is photonics? By definition it is the study of radiant energy, which is the energy of electromagnetic waves. Energy waves can be invisible, such as in the heat from the sun, radio waves, or x-rays, or quite visible, as in various forms of light. This includes lasers, fiber-optics, and even neon signs. Electromagnetic energy is in motion and its basic unit is the photon.
Think about how data is transmitted and processed, how cell phone calls are made, or even how building steel is welded. These are all good examples of how radiant or ‘photonic’ energy impacts our day-to-day lives and allow us to do more and more ‘things’ so much better than generations before us. Cell phones& computers are a long way from two cups and a string or a paper filing cabinet!
Progress continues with Sign Science focused on the science and technology of generating, and, more challenging, controlling photons (particles of light) in a new, energy efficient, way which is evolving the sign industry into bright ‘neon-like’ level of illumination. With environmental impact at the forefront of our minds, it’s nice to know that there is now an alternative to getting your glow on, with no gas, no glass, and virtually no electric bill.
You may not think of photonic energy as a tangible thing, but tangible things would not be possible without it!
